On August 9, 1976, the Work Activity Center, Inc., opened its doors, fulfilling the dreams of many disabled adults, parents, and educators in the Oklahoma City metropolitan area by providing a safe work environment as well as a social outlet. We started with five full-time and three part-time individuals who had developmental disabilities along with two staff members. Since then we have grown to thrity-two individuals ranging in age from 22 - 57 years old. We also have four supervisors and two administrative staff members. We receive NO state or federal funding, and are supported by our contracts (which pay the salaries for Shelter employees), private donations and grants. We believe everyone needs an opportunity to achieve his or her fullest potential. We recognize that individuals are happier when they are productive and that everyone benefits by contributions through meaningful work. Governance: We are governed by an Executive Board of Directors; bound by a charter and By Laws developed thirty years ago when the organization was founded. The Executive Board meets once per month: usually on the third Wednesday. We also have a Parent's Auxilliary which is comprised, primarily, of the family member's of our clients'. This group meets every other month. These individuals play a significant role and give tirelessly of themselves in coordinating the social activities and events enjoyed by our clients: dances, gift exchanges, pizza parties, etc. We encourage interested individuals to attend our Parent's Auxilliary meetings - there is no better way to give back and to learn than to participate in this process. |
